    Paraeducator Story: Jordyn Solomon

    April 1, 2025
[embed]https://youtu.be/qac_9zzuMC8[/embed]   Kelly Education is proud to highlight the work of our talented educators.   Jordyn Solomon is the winner of our 2025 Educator of the Year award in the Paraeducator category. Ms. Solomon is a long-term paraeducator at Walter M. Schirra Elementary in Old Bridge, New Jersey.
In this Q&A, Ms. Solomon shares about her work as a paraeducator.

What is your day-to-day experience like in the classroom?

I work in a self-contained Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) classroom with kindergarteners. We have six students, and every day is unique as we switch up which students we work with. Despite having a set schedule, no two days look the same due to the different needs and backgrounds of our students.   The classroom follows a structured schedule, including morning meetings, activities, lunch, and specials like music and gym. We often integrate with the general education kindergarten classes.

Why did you become a paraeducator?

I have a passion for helping children, influenced by my mom’s career working with students with special needs. She may not have been my teacher in school; however, she taught me everything I know about leading with compassion and empathy.   I want to impact not only the students’ academic lives but also their social and personal lives as well. I enjoy the opportunity to create strong relationships with students and also working beside them and encouraging them.   I graduated from college with a bachelor's degree in health sciences with the plan to become a pediatric occupational therapist. My role as a paraeducator has helped me to see that working with students is truly something I want to pursue.

What's the most rewarding aspect of being a paraeducator?

The most rewarding part is witnessing that aha moment when something clicks for a student. Seeing their faces light up, and knowing I have made a difference, brings me immense joy and fulfillment.

Any advice for those considering becoming paraeducators?

If you’re contemplating this path, I’d say go for it. It’s not only about benefiting the students’ lives but also enriching your own. Be prepared for the unexpected and approach each day with compassion and empathy.   Every student's unique background influences the way that they learn. Something that may seem easy to you can seem impossible for others. Being patient and actively listening will go a long way in understanding the students and strengthening your relationships.

Thoughts about being a recipient of an Educator of the Year award?

I was secretly nominated by the teacher and colleagues in my classroom. When the President of Kelly Education called to tell me I had won, I thought it was a prank call! It’s a huge surprise and an incredible honor.   Returning to school and seeing the decorations and receiving the congratulatory video from my colleagues was truly heartwarming. It affirmed my impact on the students and community.   The support from Kelly Education has been outstanding. From the moment I applied to work as a paraeducator, I received immediate and understanding responses to any issues or questions I had. Their resources have been invaluable.

What colleagues say about Jordyn Solomon.

“Jordyn has instructed individual students, taught small groups, managed behaviors, and followed through with behavior interventions. She demonstrates a friendly, caring manner to each child and embraces their individual differences. As a result of this strong relationship, children become actively engaged in the learning process and self-motivated learners.” - Megan Beckmann, Special Education Teacher   “Jordyn is friendly, flexible, and eager to learn in what can be a stressful and overwhelming classroom. She is willing to do whatever is needed to help our students successfully achieve milestones. Our general education students adore her as well, constantly seeking her approval, attention, and many try to sit next to her at lunch! Jordyn always shows patience, kindness, and professionalism.” - Rebecca Gamba, ABA Paraprofessional
