Sustainable Operations and Purchasing Practices

Meeting our needs without environmental compromise

Kelly recognizes the importance of sustainability—meeting our present business needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their subsequent needs. We endeavor to maintain sustainable business operations where possible, including purchasing practices that effectively support the environment. A few examples are detailed below:

Sustainable Operations

Many of our recycling and waste management practices support our goal of sustainable operations that improve efficiency and reduce operating costs, including the examples below:

  • In a recent office-lighting renovation, we replaced four-tube T-12 40-watt lamps with two-tube T-5 29-watt lamps—for a reduction of roughly 49 kW per year
  • We switched from neon to LED signage, which lasts on average 5 years longer than neon signage—reducing electrical usage by more than 80% per sign
  • We converted to a new crushing system for recycling lamps that features particulate and gas filtering to capture mercury vapors

Purchasing Practices

As feasible, Kelly prefers to purchase products and services that are produced and sold by businesses with management policies in place concerning the environment, or those that are actively engaged in environmental conservation. Purchasing practices that support the environment include:

  • Through the purchase of recycled office products alone in 2007, Kelly saved 316 trees, 1,596 gallons of oil, and 63,636 kilowatt-hours of electricity—enough to power 5.74 homes for one year
  • Purchasing Dell PCs that include their Energy Smart options
  • Purchasing energy-efficient HVAC systems
  • Using fluorescent light bulbs
