Career Fairs

Career fairs can be a great option for job seekers, and including a career fair in your job search is a great way to make new contacts and have access to many different employers. Some career fairs will focus on a specific industry or types of positions, while others are general in nature and offer every type of position that participating employers may need to fill. They are also common on college and university campuses or at specialty schools like a medical or technical college. Career fairs can also be sponsored by various businesses and companies throughout the community that are searching for qualified candidates to fill their job vacancies. Many government-owned job agencies will sponsor career fairs to attract job applicants to fill vacant job openings.

Tips to help make career fairs a success for you
In order to make the most of your job search experience at a career fair, do the following:

  • Do some research beforehand to find out which companies are participating, and who you are interested in seeing.
  • Focus your attention on employers who have job openings that fit your expertise.
  • Take current, skill-focused resumés that you can distribute to perspective employers.
  • Be prepared for short "on the spot" interviews.
  • Dress appropriately in business attire in order to make a good first impression.
