Career versus Job: What is the Difference?
To get the most out of your career, you have to put some serious thought into it. Ask yourself if you really see your current occupation as a career, or as a job. A job is something you do to make a living. Your career is also the way you make a living, but it is just more than a means to a paycheque.
The first thing you need to do to get the most out of your career is to assess whether or not you are in the best type of occupation. Are you passionate about what you do? Does your daily work ground you and give you a sense of purpose, or is it something you dread having to do? If you are in the right type of job, make it your mission to learn everything that you can about being the best in your field. If you want to be promoted, let your supervisors know of your ambition, and then conduct yourself with a level of professionalism appropriate for someone who has the type of job to which you aspire.
If your reflections lead you to the conclusion that your current occupation is just a job, seriously give some thought to what it is that you really want to do. Your job is too important and too much an integral part of your life to let it be something you don’t enjoy.
