Job market goes from strength to strength in Northern Territory

7 April 2008

The Northern Territory’s jobs market remains robust with demand for positions in sectors such as mining, construction and civil works continuing to strengthen, according to international recruitment firm, Kelly Services.

The surge in labour market activity is the result of a strong local economy, increased interstate migration and the shortage of available skilled workers.

Kelly Services’ Darwin Branch Manager, Peter Remfrey, said that demand for both blue and white collar workers remains high.

“There is increased demand for highly skilled professional and scientific workers in many large companies that are relocating to Darwin as the central hub of Asia-Pacific.”

“The blue collar sector is also witnessing strong growth and a trend to up-skilling of labourers and trades assistants to keep pace with the growing demand for trades professionals.”

However, as Darwin’s economy grows, there is also wages pressure that is inflating salaries in critical areas.

The mining and construction sectors are each experiencing strong wages growth and this is influencing salary trends throughout the market.

Mr Remfrey also said the shortages of skilled workers in the Northern Territory is attracting an influx of candidates from other states.

“More people are realising the job potential in Darwin and are relocating here to take advantage of the growing opportunities.

“This is having most impact in the light industrial and civil sector where there has been the greatest injection of skilled labour from interstate.”

In the temporary employment sector, there has been a substantial decline in the number of people available – something that appears to be in response to the more sombre economic outlook.

“Candidates are moving away from the temporary employment market and looking for higher job security in response to the current economic situation,” Mr Remfrey said.
